UKMPA to Host LISW25 Panel on Maritime Pilots’ Role in Salvage
September 10th, 2025 by James Musgrove

The UK Maritime Pilots Association (UKMPA) will host a high-profile panel discussion during London International Shipping Week (LISW25), shining a spotlight on the vital role of maritime pilots in casualty response and salvage. Navigating Crisis: The Vital Role of Maritime Pilots in Salvage will take place on Tuesday, 16 September, from 9:00–10:30am (registration and coffee from 8:30am) at the LISW25 Global Hub, County Hall, Belvedere Road, London SE1 7GP. The event will feature contributions from the UK Secretary of State’s Representative for Maritime Salvage and Intervention (SOSREP) and the Chair of the Admiralty Solicitors Group (ASG), alongside insights from UKMPA Executive members Alan Stroud and Jason Wiltshire. Drawing on their experience as serving pilots, Alan and Jason will bring frontline perspectives to this high-level discussion. Topics under discussion will include: · The role of pilot as first responder – how pilots deliver critical early interventions to stabilise distressed vessels, protecting lives, vital trade arteries, and the environment. · The contribution of pilots to strengthening the UK’s salvage response and supporting harbour masters and other stakeholders in safeguarding port operations. · Policy frameworks that underpin pilots’ work, reinforcing safety, environmental protection, and the UK’s reputation as a global maritime leader. Captain Jason Wiltshire, UKMPA vice-chair, said: “In the heat of a critical salvage incident, it is often a pilot in the role of first responder. Their skill, courage and calm under pressure can mean the difference between disaster and recovery. Pilots don’t just protect ships and cargo – they protect lives, vital trade routes, and the environment we all depend on.” The event is free to attend but places are limited.
