As a Marine Pilot you will have the conduct of vessels to ensure the safe movement from sea, berth and anchorage. This will include facilitating the completion of the vessel's passage plan; liaising with Master, Port Control and other users and acting as the Port's representative on board in the event of an emergency. You will start as a Trainee Pilot and progress through levels of authorisation up to a Class 1 Pilot, which ordinarily takes five and a half years.

You will be responsible for the safe pilotage of vessels from the point of embarkation, to the point of disembarkation, within the Port of Southampton Competent Harbour Authority Area (CHA). What you’ll be doing… Develop and maintain a knowledge and understanding of the Marine Safety Management Systems, emergency procedures / plans & operational procedures in use. The compilation of vessel passage plans, considering Harbour Authority guidelines and Directions, Southampton Bye-laws and berth guidelines. Conduct vessels under compulsory Pilotage within ABP Southampton CHA areas of jurisdiction and conduct non-compulsory Pilotage vessels if services requested. Maintain and develop the required skills and knowledge for continued authorisation as a Marine Pilot, and undertake all training as required. Maintain and develop a comprehensive and up to date knowledge of all navigational matters within the Pilotage area. Partake in the training of Pilots and trainee Pilots, including assessments and examinations. Prepare and submit incident/accident and other reports as required. Provide professional advice to the Harbour Master on local navigational and other port marine issues when required. Act as Duty Pilot when required by the duty roster. Any other relevant duties as instructed by the Harbour Master What you’ll need… STCW II/2 Certificate of Competency – Master (unlimited). Full UK Driving Licence.

The Marine Officer/Pilot role, within the Marine Department, will be responsible for providing assistance to the Senior Manager Marine Operations in the delivery of the Pilotage Service and other Marine support functions, fulfilling responsibilities of the Harbour Authority including those arising under Clydeport Authority Order Confirmation Act(s), Pilotage Act and ensuring conduct is in accordance with Port Marine Safety Code. Responsibilities will also include: - Fully engage with the Pilot training provided, obtaining initial Pilot authorisation and complete the development programme, progressing to full Class 1 qualification. Exploit opportunities to gain experience, attending training courses and tripping on larger vessel when the opportunity presents itself. - Pilot vessels within Clydeport’s jurisdiction in accordance with the Marine Safety Management System and Standard Operating Procedures, as guided by the Port Marine Safety Code. - Integrate into the Bridge team; assist, support and advise Masters in the safe navigation and pilotage of vessels, if the Marine Office Pilot is not piloting the vessel. - Develop effective working relationships with the wider Marine cohort to ensure operational requirements are met, including Pilots, Cutter Crew, GPCC/LPS Officers, Managers, Tug crew and mooring service providers. - Promote customer service excellence within your team, ensuring customer service levels are met, reporting any under performances or non-conformities with a proactive plan of recovery. - Champion a successful Health and Safety culture, striving towards the company’s zero accident ambition and promoting Safety 365. - Act as the duty Marine Officer/Pilot on a rotational basis, to support the requirements of the Marine Department.
